| Short description | This is the very rare Decca contract first press. Plays absolutely fantastic! This has to be one of the rarer Deep Ppurple recordings. First press with all the -1U matrix numbers is quite rare, but what makes this copy very special is that is was pressed by Decca instead of EMI. From time to time when their plant at Hayes near London was overloaded EMI asked either Decca or Pye to press albums for them. This Decca contract press can be told in a sevearl ways: Firstly the inner ridge on the inside of the label is typical of any Decca pressing. Secondly the mothers and stampers are not present as they would be with an EMI press. Thirdly the smaller circle around the spindle hole is also typical of any Decca pres. What is also interesting about the Decca labels for this album is that is doesn't have 'Made in Gt Bbritain' at the foot of the label, and on an EMI first press the title on the label reads: ‘Deep Purple (Made in Japan), wheras on the Decca contract press it reads ' Deep Purple Made in Japan' with no brackets surrounding the title. What is does have to identify it as a genuine 1972 first press is the 'Gramophone Co Ltd' rim wording. Later presses had EMI Records' in its place. Catalogue: Harvest - Purple TPS 3511 / 12 Matrix: TPS3511 A-1U / B-1U / TPS 3512 A-1U / B-1U. Mothers / stampers: there are none on this contract press, just the number 3 at 9'oclock on each side. With original master pressers signature hand eched on the run off grooves: Side 1: ‘Porky’, Side 2: ‘Delta Pork’. Side 3: ‘Pecko’. Side 4: ‘Peckie’. George "Porky" Peckham is an English record cutting engineer, widely recognised as among the most accomplished in the business. His master discs, and the records produced from them, are known as "Porky Prime Cuts".
